Morning has Spoken

  • Old Rectory Preston Deanery Road Northampton, England, NN7 United Kingdom (map)

‘Morning has Spoken’ welcomes our first poets of the day: four poets sharing poetry exploring themes of nature and gardens.

Each of the four poets has their own unique take on the topic – from ancient oaks to slugs – and there’ll be humour as well as thoughtfulness. We think you come away energised and inspired.

Jane Commane is a poet whose work brings place and history to life..She was poet in residence at the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth, and worked alongside light artists to create a spectacular performance for Coventry Cathedral.

Tom Harding explores the simple yet profound pleasures of life in his poetry. His recent book, Afternoon Music, reminds us of the importance of lying under a sunlit tree, or looking from an open window. “Poetry”, Tom says, “reminds us that there is another reading to life beyond the laundry list of chores and concerns that embattle us daily.”

David Oram is Garden Laureate of Quinton Old Rectory. We’re always delighted to welcome him back, and to hear his poems, often funny, always thoughtful and performed with pzazz!

Harriet Truscott is a poet intimately familiar with the struggles and delights of gardening. Her poems explore what ground elder roots have to tell us about persistence, and what a slug might feel about love. She previously worked at Cambridge Botanic Garden, which of course has neither weeds nor slugs.

Additional Poetry Biogs

Jane’s recent full-length collection, Assembly Lines, was published by Bloodaxe Books

Tom is editor of Northampton Poetry Review, as well as the poetry / arts zine The Deck Hand. His recent publications include Night Work and Afternoon Music, both from Palewell Press.

David has a back catalogue of more than 2,000 poems, a selection of which have featured on BBC Radio Northampton. David is also the author of a fairy story set in Quinton Old Rectory garden.

Harriet’s poetry appears in a range of well-known poetry magazines, including Poetry Wales, Magma Poetry, and Under the Radar.

Stay on after the readings to wander the gardens and perhaps enjoy coffee and cake from Nuts about your Coffee.
